An introduction to the 9 dolomitic systems recognized as World Heritage under UNESCO criteria VII and VIII is contained in the preface by Franco Viola, which discusses the significance for the Dolomitic area of their inclusion in the World Heritage List, and on the value of the natural and cultural landscape of the Dolomites. On this preface follows a detailed description of the geology and geomorphology of the Vallone Bellunese and of the Val de l’Ardo (in the Schiara group north of the city of Belluno) by Danilo Giordano, a description of the fauna of the valley by Michele Cassol, and a paper on the vegetal landscape and its natural history value by Cesare Lasen and Carlo Argenti. An analysis of anthropogenic aspects of the landscape proceeds from a description by Carlo Mondini of the proto-historic site of Col de Buson (the important hilltop settlement) and is followed by notes on the exploration of the dolomitic group of the Schiara and the Gusèla del Vescovà by Dino Bridda. The book concludes with a description of two walking excursions conducted during the course, which may be proposed to students and guided groups.
