This interesting book has been published in the occasion of the centenary of the first World War and portrays a “minor” world interested by the drama of the war, that of children, women, houses, civil population living together with soldiers, problems and struggles of everyday life, arts and architecture goods ruined by the war in contrast with the harmony of Nature. It contains photos, handwritten documents, topographic maps and military strategies projects about the last phases of the war, in the surroundings of Maser and the Asolo Hills, of the Captain of the Engineers Corps Alberto Alpago Novello, who was architect, engineer and a distinct photographer too; he was able to portray each technical detail of the constructions he has directed and realised, such as roads, walls, bridges, fountains, fortifications. The archive Alpago Novello was given to the G. Angelini Foundation in 1995 by the son, the architect Adriano, and is part of the G. Angelini Foundation library. We shall underline the peculiarity of his photos, that have been transformed in positive images by the original plates; the plates have been minutely ordered by the Captain himself by hour and date, through a progressive number of the shutter release, mark or acronym and according to many parameters, such as brightness, meteorological conditions, subject, diaphragm, time of exposition, personal opinion, all handwritten in some interesting notebooks.
